Life is Hard when You're 85

My first morning at my parents has made me come to grips with the fact that life is going to get harder. My mom is 79 and my Dad is going to be 86. They are both retired (my mom only within the last 6 months) and life is very regimented.

Us coming here has made them have to really readjust, but they are only so flexible. And we have spent the last hour trying to decide how to plan their morning.

I finally concluded that my best bet was to stop trying to make their plan more efficient or add things to it, and just do what they want to do, exactly how they want to do it. It doesn’t matter to me, anyway, I guess, other than that I keep wanting to make it easier.... but I need to realize that easy is the way they ALWAYS do it. So, we will do the discount store before the grocery store and we will not drive an extra 20 minutes to find a store that has things cheaper because that would mean we wouldn’t be back home in time for lunch, because we can’t eat out ... that is way too expensive and besides, they might not have exactly what we like to eat.

Sigh.

So I will let my mother plan the day and I will do things her way and when we are all done with her schedule, I may try to fit mine in.

I’m not frustrated, strangely enough, but I am worried about getting older. It really doesn’t seem fun.
