Aww, poor Carl. :( It probably wasn't anything you did, though. Some fish are just naturally hardy and some aren't. We used to have a freshwater aquarium, and we had fish that went belly-up within days (once within minutes) of being put in, and other fish that lasted unbelievable amounts of time. The fins-down winner was a goldfish that I won by throwing a Ping-Pong ball into his bowl at the county fair - I thought a carnival fish couldn't possibly last long, but he lived more than four years and grew to the size of my hand. You just never know.
Try a beta fish. They seem to survive anything! I have one that was a bribe when KC needed dental work. I promised if he would open his mouth he could get a fish. LOL That was when he was 2 and he is 5 now. Truly the fish lives a life of benign neglect.
