Character, Round 2

My daughter, Sadie, who is now only referred to as Mercedes or Cedes by her friends and teachers at her request, demonstrated incredible character yesterday.

I was caring for a couple kids yesterday and she stepped right in to entertain them. Then she started helping Bart in the kitchen. It was her day for dishes, which when Bart decides to invite 20 people over for a feast is a formidable job. So she saw ahead how many dishes there would be and she started to work on them at 3:00. She plugged away and helped cook and did dishes until supper. And then after supper she kept working until she was done.

This morning she went to the Y with me and then came home and after a shower and a healthy breakfast (she is determined to lose a bit of weight) she sat down to work on the book she is writing. She is starting with developing each character that is going to be in the book. It actually has some great potential - a novel for teenagers by a teenager about being adopted out of foster care and she has some really good ideas. She helped Bart grocery shop and now she is helping him fix lunch and put groceries away. She has been active, avoided the temptation to watch TV, and spent time interacting nicely with her family.

Furthermore, her favorite color is orange and she has realized that her friends do not think that orange is cool.

But she doesn’t care. A sixth grade girl who can wear orange when her friends think it’s uncool is my kinda girl.

I have pointed out to her how much character she has been demonstrating. I am very proud of her. She is heading in the right direction in every way. And that makes me smile.
