Court Paperwork

We got the paperwork yesterday for John’s court hearing but I hadn’t had time to read through it until a few minutes ago. His hearing is on Wednesday and he is charged with “Criminal Damage to Property in the First Degree - Felony” and “Domestic Assault - Misdemeanor.” If he was an adult he could be fined up to $10,000 or be sentenced to 5 years in prison for the damage to property charge alone.

I’m sure his court-appointed attorney will find a way for him to plead guilty to a lesser charge or something, but I don’t think John has a clue just how illegal his behavior has been. Even the misdemeanor domestic assault charge could be up to 90 days in jail for an adult, which he only two years away from becoming.

The whole situation is sad, but what is more sad is how many kids who have experienced abuse and neglect as small children end up going down this road, even after their adoptive parents do all they can for years to help them heal.
